Greenland Gap Revisited

From September 2008. Interesting comparison in that I think my work has become less abstract… less of a printmaker esthetic and more of a photographic presentation. Not that you could say that from just one image, but I can… because I know my work. At least at a certain level. But in other ways I probably am less informed than anyone. I do what feels right, intellect disengaged. It is about feelings, sensations, emotions, stirrings. There is no place for analytical thought in this process for me. That can happen later. Or not.

Beech
Fagus grandifolia, the American beech, at dusk in Canaan Wildlife Refuge. Beech hold their leaves all winter, dropping them typically as the new buds begin to swell. The little forest of beech on the right might be seedlings from the adult but are more likely root sprouts. I don’t know why but beech in more stressful environments like Canaan and Dolly Sods tend to produce little mini-forests of root sprouts.

Schoolhouse Ridge South
Honey locust on the Schoolhouse Ridge, Gleditsia triacanthos. It is interesting, at least to me, that both of the trees in the right foreground are the same species. Yet the growth habit is completely different. The tree on the left is more typical of a somewhat mature field grown honey locust. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Shenandoah Panorama
This is finally taking shape. And somebody wants to give it a home! How cool is that? In my book, very cool. It is a three frame panorama shot from a sandbar in the Shenandoah at Shannondale Springs in May of 2012. The orange background is not sky… it is the Blue Ridge. The finished size of the image is 60 inches wide by 15 inches high.

Just before sunrise at Schoolhouse Ridge South. The quality of light before the sun clears the horizon is often exquisite: soft, gentle, sensual, and rich with depth and understated color. Like someone dear to me.
