The sensuous shape of the land. This clump of trees is growing out of a sink hole, believe it or not. A sink hole on top of a hill.

Love these mornings in open spaces. One of the things I like so much is I can be my native minimalist self more easily. And I get to play with the shape of the earth itself, which for some reason has always fascinated me. You will see that more clearly as I post the rest of this series.

This morning before sun up at Schoolhouse Ridge North, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. This little clump of black locusts has hardly grown in the last ten years. Depleted soil? Anyway, it was a nice foggy morning for being afield yielding a number of good images. Robinia pseudoacacia.

After the reception and events at the Crary Gallery (Wilderness at 50) in Warren Pennsylvania I drove about an hour Northwest to Erie, then out onto Presque Isle. Presque Isle is a long finger of sand that juts into Lake Erie in a big arc, providing the sheltered water called Presque Isle Bay. The bay is surely the reason for the city of Erie. But this is not the bayside. This is the open water side of the peninsula, looking more or less west and into the throat of another squall.

Judging from the local creeks the river was running pretty low. I would love to see this when it is really cranking with a full head and high demand for electricity. That is the entire Allegheny RIver coming out of this two shoots.

Just back from my recent trip to Western Pennsylvania and the Wilderness 50th celebration at the Crary Gallery in Warren. I simply can’t say enough about the kindness, warmth, and generosity of the folks associated with the gallery and the people of Warren in general. It was a very special visit.
This is a side view of the spillway of the Kinzua Dam on the Allegheny River, a short distance upriver from Warren. I have some pretty mixed feelings about dams in general, this one included, but they do present some interesting visual material. I have another image of this spillway that I will be posting next.
Now a little shameless self promotion: My four images will continue to be exhibited until the end of September along with many other fine images from the likes of Craig Blacklock, Clyde Butcher, Kevin Ebi, Scot Miller, David Muench, and a few other equally fine photographers. It has truly been an honor!

North Branch of Patterson Creek in Greenland Gap, just above the falls. I made a similar image here in 2008, attached below.

From September 2008. Interesting comparison in that I think my work has become less abstract… less of a printmaker esthetic and more of a photographic presentation. Not that you could say that from just one image, but I can… because I know my work. At least at a certain level. But in other ways I probably am less informed than anyone. I do what feels right, intellect disengaged. It is about feelings, sensations, emotions, stirrings. There is no place for analytical thought in this process for me. That can happen later. Or not.

I wonder if this is where our idea of Easter colors comes from. I could have pushed more color into it than this of course, but this is more how it was–not that I am a documentarian, but the light was spectacular as it was. I spent the morning wandering around the industrial waste that has been dumped for years into the old quarry near Millville. There is something fascinating about this barren land, a glimpse of it in the lower left corner. Who knows what I am exposing myself to by being there.
