An ancient and massive tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, at the Claymont Court. There are a number of really beautiful trees here. More to come.
For those not familiar with this area the Claymont Plantation was land owned by George Washington’s brother John just outside of Charles Town, West Virginia. The land was adjacent to what was the Bullskin Plantation, the first land owned by George Washington. There are a number of old southern style estates in this area, a many of which were owned by various members of the Washington family, and all of which were built and operated by slaves.
