A capture from this past weekend. The weather plays a large role in everything on Dolly Sods, including the shapes of these Ilex montana, literally mountain holly. This is an accurate description but is a bit confusing at the same time because another deciduous holly native to these same places goes by the common name of mountain holly. It was formerly Nemopanthus mucronatus, but has been reclassified and now is Ilex mucronata. But to sum it up the plants shown here are Ilex montana.
