Canaan Haw with Black Cherries

It seems my fascination with tree textures continues. It has been pretty much a life long preoccupation, bordering on obsession. I wish I could share everything I see, but much doesn’t translate well into a compelling image. A Crataegus sp., and Prunus serotina. By the way, this was taken with my new A7rII – a camera I am in love with after only one outing.

Thinking May

High Meadow Hawthorns, West Virginia

Hawthorns – Crataegus. This is from about 10 years ago, shot with a view camera onto color negative film. Looking forward to this time of year again, and hoping that summer doesn’t come roaring in like a lion. This is a meadow in the West Virginia Highlands but I don’t remember exactly where. I was on my way to Spruce Knob, though this was not on the flanks of the Allegheny Front… probably the mountain to the east of that.

Hawthorns on Dolly Sods

DollySods_DSC9323In a way this image has been brewing for a good 30 years. Some of you will not understand, particularly after looking at what I think will not be a well received image. None the less, here it is.

Hawthorn, Crataegus sp. (no idea which), Wind Meadow in Dolly Sods Wilderness. I spent four days in the highlands recently. This is the first of what I believe will be many from that trip. Had a great time, and met some interesting people who are also photographers.

Canaan Valley Haws

Lots of old gnarly hawthorns in Canaan Valley, Crataegus sp, though this group is relatively young.

This image was processed from raw in Aperture. I use Lightroom now for conversions because because I like some of the tools better. But having said that the color renderings I get from Aperture are far superior to Lightroom, IMHO of course. Wish I could take some tools from Lightroom and Capture 1 and and use them with Aperture’s color engine.

Tree Portrait: Hawthorn

A beautiful craggy hawthorn tree, Crataegus sp., actually two trees, in Canaan Valley NWR. Very characteristic of hawthorns in the Highlands. This is the first of a new series of tree portraits that will probably bore most of you to tears.

Hawthorns

Another brilliant sunshine May day, this time in Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Lots of fine hawthorns here. Hawthorns are beautiful trees, but often hard to photograph well.

Crataegus. I don’t pretend to know more than the genus with hawthorns.
