Hackberries

45mm Zeiss Planar G

Celtis occidentalis, on the farm across the road from my property. All the large trees here are hackberry. These trees are old, and my guess is this is a virgin stand. This one acre patch contains is a steep ravine and a large cave entrance making it completely unsuitable for tillage. And hackberries, while tough trees, have little value as lumber, firewood, or fence posts, so there would have been no reason to clear this little patch.
