Tupelo on the Front
This is what the weather does to Nyssa sylvatica (tupelo, black gum, etc.) on the Allegheny Front. These are old trees. Total height is perhaps 15 feet. There are other groves of tupelo on the front, another that I photographed can be seen on the wilderness page of my main web site (Navigation / Front Door / Wilderness). They grow normally until their height gets them into the wind. Then desiccation of buds and the weight of snow and ice takes over. The form of most trees on The Front is distorted beyond what is easily recognized by the severe conditions.

Allegheny Front at Dawn
Mining some older exposures, as I tend to do this time of the year, and working them up fresh from raw. This was made just before sunrise in May of 2012. I wonder how much snow there is on this landscape right now. Probably plenty.
This was shortly before I got my Nikon 800e. I was using my Canon 5D Mk II then. It did some things very well, like color and its implementation of live view; but it was really poor at other things, like resolution and producing robust raw files. I can see why it was popular with wedding photographers.

Dolly Sods
Dusk near Bear Rocks. This is an older image I reworked recently to print for a show. This and other images are currently exhibited at The Bridge Gallery in Shepherdstown in connection with the Conservation Film Festival, now in progress in Shepherdstown.

Milky Way from Dolly Sods – the other direction
This is the same as the previous post but looking northeast. The galaxy is not quite as spectacular here mostly because the gas clouds are not apparent. But I like our earthly clouds.

Sunrise from the Allegheny Front
May of last year. This is a three frame panorama, 61 inches wide at 360 ppi. There is a dramatic loss of visual information scaling down to 10 inches at 100 ppi.

Royal Fern Fiddleheads
At least I think that is what they are, Osmunda spectabilis. They were a good 3 feet high and still fiddleheads! And the other Osmundas were already up and out. I don’t believe there is anything else they could be. On Dolly Sods.

Cleft
Beach on a mountaintop. This is not the same rock, location, year, or camera as Allegheny Front, though it is the same old sandstone formation.

Old Friend
A nemopanthus (now reclassified as Ilex mucronata – Mountain Holly) in Wind Meadow on Dolly Sods slowly but surely fades. Heavy snows are now breaking its branches. I wonder how old it is? I guess it is as old as I am at a minimum. It might be a few years yet but it is clearly leaving. I can’t tell you how many times I have photographed it, though this is the most successful.
