Canaan Mountain Hemlock
Tsuga canadensis. These hemlocks growing out in the open on Canaan Mountain seem to be barely hanging on, more dead than alive. They prefer sheltered valleys and hollows where they don’t get buffeted by the wind. On the positive side the woolly adelgid doesn’t seem to be present on these trees, probably because of the same abusive climate.
