Canaan Haw

CanaanHaw_DSC9173

Crataegus sp., with characteristic thorns (rare individuals are thorn free) and plenty of lichen. Lichen seems to grow profusely on hawthorns, more so than other trees growing in the same area. There are some old and particularly craggy hawthorns in Canaan Valley, trees I find to be visually appealing. But for a number of reasons they can be hard to photograph well.
