Broomsedge at the Crossroads

Broomsedge, Andropogon virginicus, one of about 60 species in the genus and certainly the most common in the Mid-Atlaintic region. Lore has it as an indicator of poor soils. This photo was taken in spring. The copper color you see is last year’s seed bearing growth. Broomsedge is a warm season grass so there would have been little new growth in the middle of May when this was taken.
