North Fork Mountain
A glorious day atop the bluffs on North Fork Mountain! While I encountered a number of technical and aesthetic problems shooting up there I still want to post a few. In this shot the drop from the rock is probably 100 feet into the tree tops. Below that is the scree accumulation from the rock face.
The little bit of a mountain visible on the left is the Allegheny Front. Dolly Sods and Roaring Plains Wilderness areas are up there. It doesn’t look it from this image but the top of North Fork Mountain where I am standing is probably 1000 to 1500 feet BELOW the crest of the Allegheny Front. In fact, North Fork and New Creek Mountains, the first mountain chain east of the Front exist in the rain shadow of the Front, and the difference in vegetation is partly a result.
I’ll talk a little more about the differences in future North Fork Mountain posts.
